- The great transcontinental electric car race of 1968 pitted Caltech’s 1958 VW bus against MIT’s 1968 Corvair, each modified to operate on battery power alone. Caltech’s student-built entry took a corrected time fo 210 hours to go from Pasadena to Cambridge and was declared the winner by 30 minutes. Student activities.
