- Abstract
- Apollo XIII was NASA’s third lunar landing attempt. Part of the mission involved the collection of lunar rock samples to be analyzed in Caltech’s geology department by Gerald Wasserburg’s “Lunatic Asylum.” Famously, the mission was aborted after the rupture of a service module oxygen tank. Upon their return, the astronauts, James A. Lovell, (commander), John L. Swigert, Jr., (command module pilot) and Fred W. Haise, Jr. (lunar module pilot) signed a photo for Wasserburg that included the remark, “Sorry we couldn’t bring back any rocks.” Wasserburg Papers.
