Reproduced from essay by Karl Winter, “Der Tod des Archimedes,” from the 82nd Winckelmann Program of the Archaeological Society of Berlin, 1924. The provenance was represented as passing through the estate of Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860) back to Herculaneum. More recent study places its origin in the Renaissance.
